Racing To Zero is a quick moving, up-tempo documentary that presents new solutions to the global problem of waste. Although waste may create garbage, garbage is in itself a RESOURCE, and that is the key.

WHY

Because we are beginning to drown in our garbage!

It is important to understand that garbage has an enormous impact on global warming, in fact, it contributes to 44% of the greenhouses gases that are affecting the environment. The size of the problem is reflected by the World Bank’s first global analysis in which they project a staggering increase in garbage during the next 13 years—from 1.43 billion tons per year to 2.42 billion tons per year in 2025.

SF is responding and has already received global recognition for it’s 80% recycling average.

HOW

By changing our relationship to garbage!

Guess What? Although waste may create garbage, garbage is in itself, a RESOURCE It is now almost all recycyclable, has another life, can become something else.

This new culture of awareness is spreading, both ordinary people and extraordinary people are trying to make a difference. New practices, new businesses, new composting technologies and new sources of energy, have resulted from their efforts to eliminate all waste, so that nothing goes to landfill and everything has another life. Solutions are popping up everywhere! To date not everything is solvable but the Race is on.

REMEMBER: THE EARTH IS NOT FLAT!

Feed people not landfills, read labels, use less, and buy with recycle in mind. The linear model which inspires industry to be guided by preconceived obsolescence (use, toss and buy again), must be replaced with nature’s cyclical model for ongoing renewal. Can this be done?

According to Robert Haley from San Francisco’s Department of the Environment, in charge of the Race, a successful effort will “require that every person and everything that they touch must become part of the effort. Everyone must participate.” Recycling must become as natural as stopping for a red light. The trick is to educate and take away the confusion, to remove the need to make decisions so that people can act reflexively. He knows that the solution lies in changing the negative perception of garbage to that of its potential as an inevitable RESOURCE.
